I spent many years as a police reporter. It was a great job for a young, single guy who could spend all night at a fire scene or camping out during a hostage situation. I soon came to realize that all my friends were cops, reporters and bartenders — the only people wide awake at 3 a.m. on weekdays.

Years later, I took a job handling media issues for the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. I remember thinking that I would once again be on the front lines of law enforcement, hanging out with the men and women who kick in doors, take down bad guys and keep us safe.
