Teamwork is defined as the cooperative effort by the members of a group to achieve a common goal. Whether in a law firm, corporate or governmental paralegal position, teamwork is a key element to accomplishing the common goal — that is, winning or successfully defending a case. While the ability of a paralegal to work independently under attorney supervision is essential, a paralegal does not work in a bubble. Thus, the ability of a paralegal to work effectively within the legal team in order to increase productivity is equally important.

In order to achieve the ultimate objective of success in a case, a paralegal should be cognizant of the roles of all personnel within the office. So the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” it takes the collaborative efforts of the entire legal team to attain high-quality results in a case. If a paralegal attempts to undertake too many responsibilities, the road to success will be a cumbersome one. Instead, a paralegal should acknowledge and embrace the contributions of his or her colleagues.
