The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that the board overseeing Philadelphia’s Girard College is immune from real estate taxes because it is a commonwealth agency.

In City of Philadelphia v. Cumberland County Board of Assessment Appeals, the justices ruled unanimously that a property in Cumberland County—owned by the city of Philadelphia as a trustee of the Stephen Girard trust and leased by Girard’s Board of Directors of City Trusts—is not subject to real estate taxes.
