Like many of you reading this column, I get bombarded with emails that provide links to innumerable articles and opinion pieces about e-discovery. Many of them have themes or points of view that have made me scratch my head (which, given that I am bald, can hurt). Without pointing to specific articles or people, I will discuss one of those themes, namely, that e-discovery has become or is fast becoming commoditized.

Merriam-Webster defines “commoditize” as “to render (a good or service) widely available and interchangeable with one provided by another company.” In what I have read and heard, the term has been used to convey that meaning with regard to e-discovery services.
