Every day we read in our local newspapers or watch local TV news about another high school, college or NFL football player getting knocked out or taken off the field on a stretcher or, worse yet, dying on the way to or after admission to the local hospital.
The scenario is usually described this way: “Johnny G., one of the leading rushers on the high school team, died today at our local hospital. He was an outstanding student and one of the team’s co-captains. Family, friends, coaches and school officials have been devastated by this tragic outcome. Coach Smith commented late last night that Johnny was a great student and a team leader and this is a horribly bizarre outcome from a play that looked perfectly executed.”
