An international scheme that defrauded a French company of 17 million euros and touched three continents alighted briefly in federal court in Philadelphia.
The company, Societe d’Etude de Realisation et d’Exploitation pour le Traitement du Mais, called Seretram for short, sought a subpoena for the Chesterbrook, Pa.-based Web hosting provider through which the perpetrator of the fraud got his email. Through an ex parte application, Seretram asked the court for permission to subpoena 1&1 Mail & Media Inc., and U.S. District Judge Gene E.K. Pratter of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania complied.
