Quality of care and electronic health records have significant effects on physicians’ professional satisfaction, according to a study conducted by the RAND Corporation and sponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA). The study aimed to identify factors that influence physicians’ professional satisfaction across different practice types. The authors suggested that policymakers focus attention on these factors, rather than the “typical tools used to influence physician behavior,” such as regulations, payment rules and the threat of legal action.
The study was based on data from 30 physician practices in six states: Colorado, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. The practices were selected for diversity in practice size, specialty and ownership model. Researchers used the following data collection methods: (1) questionnaires about organizational structure, electronic health records and participation in innovative payment models; (2) interviews at each practice with practicing physicians, practice leaders and other clinical staff; and (3) survey responses from physicians in the practices. The data was collected between January and August, and results were published in a report titled “Factors Affecting Physician Professional Satisfaction and Their Implications for Patient Care, Health Systems, and Health Policy.”
