In rejecting the president’s nomination of Debo Adegbile to the position of assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Division, the U.S. Senate did a grave disservice to the nation’s legal profession and to the protection of constitutional rights. The rebuke stings particularly sharply here in Philadelphia, as it was Adegbile’s legal work on a notorious Philadelphia case that killed his nomination, and Philadelphia and Pennsylvania politicians played a prominent role in the Senate’s decision.
The Senate reacted to a political misinformation campaign drummed up by law enforcement interests and political opportunists who used Adegbile’s nomination to advance their own agendas, with little to no regard for the truth, for fundamental legal principles, or for the collateral, chilling damage wrought by their opposition.
