Following the shift toward craft-centric alcohol throughout the United States and around the world, hard cider has begun its own revolution for American alcohol consumers. According to industry sources, the U.S. market’s top 10 cider brands increased by 62.6 percent in 2012 and are expected to continue earning double-digit growth for many years to come. The strength and potential of the hard-cider market has not gone unnoticed as many large industry players, including Anheuser-Busch InBev, Boston Beer, MillerCoors and Heineken, have all gotten into the market either through developing their own hard-cider brand or by acquiring a cider producing company.
As the hard-cider market experiences this exponential growth, however, much confusion remains at the federal and state level regarding the legal definition of this product and, accordingly, what set of laws should govern its distribution and sale.
