On Jan. 31, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) released its work plan for fiscal year 2014. The OIG’s mission is to protect the integrity of Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) programs, and the majority of its resources are directed toward the Medicare and Medicaid programs and the health and welfare of their beneficiaries. The work plan provides an important guide to the OIG’s enforcement priorities for the year.

The consequences of OIG activities can be significant for health care providers. For fiscal year 2013, the OIG reported: exclusions of 3,214 individuals and entities from participation in federal health care programs; 960 criminal actions against individuals or entities that engaged in crimes against HHS programs; and 472 civil actions, which include false claims and unjust enrichment lawsuits, civil monetary penalties settlements and administrative recoveries related to provider self-disclosure matters.
