Removing the $675 million limit on the amount that the NFL would have to pay to former players suffering from head injuries satisfied the federal judge overseeing the massive case, as she granted preliminary approval Monday to the second proposed settlement.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania had rejected the first deal, which capped the National Football League’s payment toward a recovery fund for former players at $675 million, in January. She granted preliminary approval to the second deal Monday, just over a week after it was presented.
