The concept of marketing for a young associate just beginning a career in law can seem overwhelming and quite frankly unnecessary. Shouldn’t the first couple of years of hands-on experience for an associate be focused primarily on research and brief writing and, in turn, proving your intellectual worth to your superiors? Yes, but there is more: marketing yourself and your law firm. As a young associate, there are a number of very easy marketing-focused activities you can incorporate into your weekly schedule that can help groom you to be a business development success down the road. A few marketing tips are included below:
Stay Connected
Keep in touch with college and law school classmates and add them as contacts in your Outlook. Develop a habit of reviewing your Outlook contacts at least once a month and create an ongoing list of those contacts that you have not reached out to in a while and would like to keep in touch with. Select one or two of those contacts a month and reach out to them to set up a meeting (nothing formal—a lunch, drinks, a baseball game). When you go out with these contacts, especially early on in your career, business does not even have to be on the agenda. Just concentrate on building the relationship.
