A full-scale law firm acquisition would be somewhat of an outlier in Morgan, Lewis & Bockius’ growth strategy, but it may be just what the firm is about to do with reports this weekend that leadership at Morgan Lewis and Boston-based Bingham McCutchen have agreed to press forward with a merger.

Over the last decade or more, Morgan Lewis has grown by grabbing smaller groups, often from firms that are in trouble or are disbanding, such as Dewey & LeBoeuf, Thelen LLP and Howrey LLP. But with a new chairwoman set to take over Oct. 1, and that person—Jami Wintz McKeon—one of the architects of Morgan Lewis’ biggest grab of lawyers from a troubled firm, some say 1,400-lawyer Morgan Lewis may be changing its strategy.
