A law took effect last week that would require a conviction for a first DUI offense before conviction and sentencing for a second offense.
The sponsor of the bill, state Rep. Seth Grove, R-York, said it was the result of a Pennsylvania Supreme Court case, Commonwealth v. Haag, that ruled a driver arrested twice in one day for DUI would be given the lighter penalty for a first offense since there was no conviction for a second offense.
