The state Senate on a 37-12 vote passed legislation that would prohibit local governments from approving ordinances mandating paid or unpaid vacation or sick leave beyond what state and federal law currently allows.

The bill is specifically aimed at blunting an ordinance signed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter in February requiring businesses with 10 or more employees to give workers at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked. But it serves as a notice to other local governments as well, said the bill’s sponsor, state Sen. John Eichelberger, R-Blair.
