On occasion, the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG) will profile top-ranked officials who have excelled in promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace. This month, we interview Shelley R. Smith, the city solicitor for Philadelphia. Appointed by Mayor Michael A. Nutter in January 2008, Smith returned to the Law Department as city solicitor after working in the private sector at Ballard Spahr and Exelon. Previously, Smith served as a trial lawyer and supervisor in the Civil Rights Division of the Law Department, where her practice focused on federal constitutional tort litigation. She later became head of the Law Department’s Affirmative Litigation Unit, the Labor and Employment Unit, and the Corporate and Tax Group.
