Say what you will about judicial elections in Pennsylvania and the embarrassing results they sometimes produce, but the commonwealth’s current method for direct voter selection of appellate judges does not appear likely to change any time soon. And, in less than one month from now, Pennsylvania voters are set to elect three new justices to serve on the seven-justice Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, along with new judges to serve on both of Pennsylvania’s intermediate appellate courts.
Fortunately, the six major party candidates for Pennsylvania’s highest court all seem to possess the necessary background and ability to serve admirably in the position they are seeking. Four of the six have considerable experience serving as judges on an intermediate appellate court. And the remaining two candidates have lengthy experience serving as trial court judges. These candidates are not unknown commodities, so lawyers have little excuse not to make an informed decision and to try to spread the word among friends and family located within Pennsylvania about which candidates seem to be the most highly qualified.
