The mission of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG) is to make our legal profession stronger, more productive and better equipped to address the challenges of the 21st century through fostering the participation of a more diverse group of lawyers in the Greater Philadelphia region. PDLG is composed of Greater Philadelphia’s leading law firms and corporate legal departments that are committed to advancing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. In 13 years, PDLG has placed 370 diverse summer associate fellows who have completed their first year of studies with the hope that they will obtain permanent employment with our city’s leading law firms and corporate legal departments. To fulfill its mission, PDLG is well aware that it must not only introduce the fellows to the Greater Philadelphia legal market but also assist firms and companies with their efforts to retain diverse attorneys and cultivate a diverse and inclusive work environment—where Philadelphia has not performed well against national norms. To that end, PDLG, in conjunction with the Philadelphia Bar Association, is scheduled to hold its Diversity and Inclusion Symposium, titled “Best Practices for Retaining and Promoting Diverse Talent,” on Thursday at the Union League of Philadelphia.

We know from countless studies, surveys and personal experiences that hidden barriers in organizations created by various forms of bias are the root cause of attrition rates at law firms and companies, particularly with respect to diverse attorneys. Diverse attorneys leave legal organizations at greater rates than non-diverse attorneys because the structure and culture of those organizations are not inclusive. To help us reverse these trends, PDLG has enlisted the expert advice of Jerry Kang, professor of law and the inaugural vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion at University of California, Los Angeles, a national thought leader in the field of implicit bias.
