It’s no secret that technology is changing the workplace. For lawyers, working remotely no longer means lugging heavy files home and handwriting briefs; the ever-increasing amount of technology and apps related to the practice of law allow us the gift (or curse) of “freedom.” Equipped with the proper technology, lawyers can now work from literally anywhere, at any time, as if sitting in front of their office computer. Laptops, tablets, smartphones, cloud computing, video conferencing and email allow for more flexibility and, in many cases, increased responsiveness to client needs.

Technology innovations in legal practice have clear benefits. Lawyers who are able to connect to their office computer or network remotely are often more productive and more engaged in their work. Constant access to electronic files allows associates to spend more time on their cases and provide quick responses to partner or client demands regardless of physical location. Advanced technology can essentially allow young associates to be just as responsive outside the office as they are sitting at their desk. This “virtual face time” provides numerous personal benefits as well. Being able to work from home can often alleviate the burdens of child care expenses and lessen commute time, allowing for more quality time spent with family or free time to do whatever it is young lawyers like to do outside of work.
