Depending on the size of a firm and its location, referrals by employees who work for the firm can be critically important in terms of the firm getting new business. One of the key aspects of encouraging business is to let all employees know what type of law the firm practices. Obviously, if the employees work for a one- or two-person firm, then everyone knows the type of law. But most firms are larger and some firms are divided into different divisions where one division doesn’t talk much to the others, except perhaps at a Christmas party.

It’s critical to let all employees know the type of law practice and the type of cases lawyers are handling. It is also a good idea to let clients know. Many clients assume that the lawyer who is representing them on a criminal case is a criminal lawyer only and doesn’t do domestic or civil litigation. Even if the lawyer doesn’t, there is probably a partner or associate who does. But, if clients aren’t advised, and if employees aren’t advised, then there are not going to be client referrals to the firm.
