As the state Supreme Court welcomes three new justices to the fold, there remains an open question about which of its veteran members will become the next chief justice of Pennsylvania.

Justice J. Michael Eakin’s designation as the justice “next longest in continuous service” upon Chief Justice Thomas G. Saylor’s retirement, scheduled for 2016, could be upset by Eakin’s interim suspension, court observers and attorneys said. The result, they said, is that Eakin could be bypassed if he remains on the court when Saylor retires, turning the reins over to Justice Max Baer for one year before his own impending retirement.
