Doug Gansler, the special prosecutor hired by Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane to review offensive emails exchanged by government employees, has been involved in lobbying efforts on behalf of Kane regarding a Senate committee pursuing her possible removal from office, according to sources familiar with the committee’s investigation.

Gansler had a hand in securing the appearance of former Gov. Ed Rendell on behalf of Kane at the Jan. 12 hearing before the committee, in which Rendell testified that Kane can continue to function in office with a suspended law license, sources said. Rendell and Kane’s chief of staff, Jonathan Duecker, both testified that the legal and policy functions of running a prosecutor’s office are separate.
