Being the recently elected president of The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals, I have had the need to think about what I believe are the traits of a good leader. I thought back to the people who have influenced me, both professionally and personally. Those people were good listeners, good teachers, they were patient, and they were encouraging. Being a leader is more than just a title. Good role models and leaders know that you teach people not just by words but by actions.
A leader is someone who may be a parent, a friend, a teacher, a co-worker, or a boss. These are individuals who guide us and mold us into the people who we become and who prepare us to be leaders to others. From my own experience, my mother has been a constant guiding force in my life. She was my first role model and leader. She listened to me, she gave me advice and she showed me how to make tough decisions. She has shown me that through hard work and perseverance you can accomplish anything. In addition, she has also shown me that you should always follow through on your promises. No matter how big or how small something is you need to be able to show people your commitment. Because of the lessons that she taught me I feel that I was open to guidance and leadership from others and that I am prepared to provide it as well.
