The U.S. Department of Labor last week announced its final rule updating overtime regulations, expanding pay protection to 185,000 new Pennsylvanians and giving employers six months to ensure compliance. Employment attorneys said the new regulations present a complex set of challenges to employers that are likely to lead to a burst of litigation against businesses slow to adapt, as well as more lawsuits over off-the-clock work.
Of the changes made to regulations on overtime pay, effective Dec. 1, the most significant update doubles the threshold for overtime exemption among salaried workers, setting it at $47,476. The move is expected to make more than 4 million employees eligible for overtime pay nationwide, the Labor Department said.
