U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey, D-Pennsylvania, said he received hundreds of requests for governmental appointments because, as an early supporter of Barack Obama’s candidacy, he was thought to have influence with the president.

But when U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, D-Pennsylvania, wrote Casey in 2008 for the consideration of his friend and former Rendell administration Deputy Mayor Herbert Vederman—a contributor to Casey’s 2006 senatorial campaign—the senator declined to give Vederman his stamp of approval for an ambassadorship.
