Despite the high drama surrounding Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane for much of her term, her office’s consumer protection division has ramped up efforts over the past two years, according to its chief, Basil Merenda.
Since he joined in April 2014, Merenda said, the division has gone from filing a few dozen legal actions each year to more than 130 in 2015. That push relies, in part, on undercover investigations to minimize internet and telephone scams and unlicensed activity. Last year, that meant $30.5 million in restitution for consumers, Merenda said.
