As calls for more restrictive gun regulations grow in fervor and frequency around the country, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has struck down an act that allowed organizations such as the National Rifle Association to challenge local gun-control laws in court.

The court unanimously ruled June 20 in Leach v. Turzai that Act 192, signed into law by then-Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in November 2014, did not pass the single-subject rule of the Pennsylvania Constitution. The act established criminal penalties for the theft of metals while also creating a civil avenue to challenge firearms legislation. The decision takes away the standing of gun groups to bring cases against municipalities over their ordinances.
