Ray White is 91 years old, a World War II veteran who served as a first lieutenant with the Ninth Air Force and carried paratroopers to the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he became a stockbroker and lived at the Dorchester on Rittenhouse Square for 25 years. Anticipating a comfortable retirement, he moved to a home he bought in Center City, where he lived alone.
But in early 2012, defendant Melvin McIlwaine befriended him, claiming to have mutual interest in antique cars. White owned a 1964 Bentley and a 1969 Cadillac convertible.
