A law firm that allegedly attempted to intimidate family members into paying off their loved ones’ medical bills has settled civil charges levied against it by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General for $6,432.

The OAG sued James Havassy and his Lehigh Valley law firm, Hamilton Law Group, in May 2015, alleging the firm used the Filial Responsibility Law to improperly suggest family members had to pay their relatives’ debts. Under the settlement, Havassy and the law firm also agreed to help restore the credit profiles of the alleged victims and to discontinue collection efforts against individuals who are in collection based solely on the Filial Responsibility Law.
