Following is a listing of executive and legislative activity for the week of July 5. Members of the General Assembly are at the call of legislative leaders.

Protecting Animals

Rep. Frank Farry, R-Bucks, introduced legislation, HB 2245, that would provide protection for humane officers from frivolous and baseless lawsuits arising from the lawful enforcement of animal cruelty laws. Farry said that under current law, humane officers are not afforded any immunity from civil suits. As a result, they and their nonprofit employers are forced to waste their limited resources defending against baseless lawsuits—potentially for months—until the suits are thrown out. This causes a tremendous waste of resources that would otherwise go to supporting the mission of protecting neglected and abused animals, according to Farry.
