Merck & Co. announced a number of changes to its research and development operations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey this week, but the company says the legal department will not be affected.

But that’s not always the case when a large company relocates significant portions of a department. The effects of those changes on in-house and outside counsel oftentimes depend upon the legal needs of the department that is moving.
