Bruce L. Castor Jr., the solicitor general hired in March by Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, has been selected to be the Office of Attorney General’s first deputy. Castor will replace Bruce Beemer, who is set to become Pennsylvania’s inspector general after repeatedly finding himself at odds with Kane and her closest advisers. If Kane, a Democrat, were removed from office—either by a criminal conviction in her upcoming trial or through impeachment—Castor, a Republican, would serve as acting attorney general.
Castor also reached an agreement with Kane’s sister, Ellen Granahan, to settle her gender-discrimination complaint against the OAG. The settlement raises Granahan’s salary to $105,018, office spokesman Jeff Johnson said. She is also set to receive $24,764 in back pay, covering the period from Jan. 1, 2015, through June 30; $26,666 in attorney fees; and $28,570 for emotional distress and compensatory damages. Granahan had filed a complaint against the OAG with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging she was paid less than her male counterparts. Granahan’s new salary represents a nearly 20 percent raise. Granahan is chief of the OAG’s child predator unit.
