Harrisburg-based U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith, a longtime federal prosecutor who oversaw the completion of the “kids-for-cash” corruption prosecution, is set to retire at the end of the month, his office announced Monday.

During his six-year tenure, multiple public officials brought up on corruption charges in the Middle District of Pennsylvania received convictions, including the two Luzerne County judges who masterminded the “kids-for-cash” scandal, Michael Conahan and Mark Ciavarella; state Sen. Robert Mellow, convicted of filing a false tax return; and two Lackawanna County commissioners, Robert C. Cordaro and Anthony J. Munchak, charged in a pay-to-play bribery scheme.
