The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has taken up the case of a group of nurses and medical workers who claim they were fired from an Erie-based hospital over their religious objections to mandatory flu vaccinations.

In a complaint filed against Saint Vincent Health Center in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the commission alleged that the hospital failed to accommodate the religious beliefs of the six plaintiffs, all adherents of different religious sects. The suit focused on Saint Vincent’s mandatory flu vaccination policy, which requires all employees to either receive the shot, or wear a face mask for the duration of flu season.
