A recent change in the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct, allowing lawyers and law firms to buy and sell a single area of practice, could have a major impact on succession planning for solo practitioners.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Sept. 23 approved an amendment to Rule 1.17, which governs the sale of a law practice, adding to the rule that a lawyer can buy or sell an area of practice. It is set to take effect Oct. 23.
