Martin Black, head of Dechert’s intellectual property practice, essentially had the entire month of October “blocked off” on his calendar, as he prepared to argue his first case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case, which was set for oral argument on Nov. 1, is the culmination of an impressive year for the firm’s 11-attorney IP group in Philadelphia, which saw an impressive mix of appellate work and patent litigation. But more importantly, it represents a chance for Dechert to make its mark on the shifting landscape of American patent law.
