In a ruling that may indicate shifting attitudes toward insurance-related public policy concerns, Verizon’s failure to notify its drivers that it canceled its underinsured motorist policy means the insurance carrier should still have to provide coverage, despite the cancellation, a Pennsylvania judge has ruled.

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Ramy I. Djerassi determined in Bielec v. American International Group that the communications giant’s failure to provide notice that it was canceling its insurance policy for its drivers went against public policy, and therefore the cancellation was void.
