Defense lawyers in state Sen. Lawrence Farnese’s criminal case said federal prosecutors have no business looking into allegations that he bribed a Philadelphia Democratic committeewoman.

At a pretrial hearing before U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe in Philadelphia federal court Wednesday, counsel for Farnese and former Democratic committeewoman Ellen Chapman asked for a dismissal on the grounds that prosecutors are overstepping their authority by engaging in what is essentially an internal party matter of no public consequence.
