President Donald Trump, a practiced showman, built up suspense in the lead-up to the televised announcement of his nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.

D. Brooks Smith, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was caught up in the suspense up until a few hours prior to the announcement, when Trump chose Tenth Circuit Judge Neil Gorsuch over his colleague Thomas Hardiman.
