I once asked a retired partner from my firm what surprised him most about retirement. He said it was the amount of time he spent on the telephone dealing with health insurance issues. This illustrates the need to learn a new set of skills during retirement, semi-retirement or continued full-time work in later years. Those skills certainly involve negotiating the labyrinth of health insurance rules and bureaucracies. But there is so much more.
Because many people who are at or approaching a retirement age have a difficult time deciding to begin making decisions and acting upon them, it might make sense to approach this type of planning with the decisions that must be made and then proceed to those that offer options as to when they are faced.
