The Pennsylvania Superior Court en banc has reversed a previous ruling by a three-judge panel that said a parent could be charged criminally for bringing a pocket knife to an elementary school.

In a case of first impression that attorneys have said could significantly impact the way schools guard against weapons on their property, an en banc panel unanimously ruled Feb. 16 that Section 912(c) of 18 Pa.C.S.A., which allows a weapon to be brought on school grounds if it is used for a supervised school activity or “‘other lawful purpose,’” must be interpreted broadly.
