The First Judicial District is planning to use cellphone-locking technology at the Criminal Justice Center—although attorneys and court officials will be largely exempt from the new rules.

A statement from the court said the new measures are being done “in an effort to deter, if not eliminate, intimidation of witnesses and courtroom disruptions.” Court officials announced Thursday that the district plans to use lockable pouches that fit the form of a cellphone for members of the public as they enter the courtroom.
