My law firm is running out of space both in the office and in storage for the large number of closed files. I would like to destroy all files that are older than 10 years. Are there any ethical problems with doing so?

The Rules of Professional Conduct are silent on how long one has to keep client files. There are rules for maintaining financial records. Under Rule 1.15, there is a five-year requirement. There are also rules for maintaining advertisements for two years (see Rule of Professional Conduct 7.2(b)).
