It seems like only yesterday, but it has been 10 years since we were law school students at Temple University selected to be part of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group (PDLG) Fellows Program. As ­anyone familiar with the organization knows, the PDLG is committed to ­growing and retaining the presence of diverse attorneys in the Philadelphia area. The key driver of the organization’s ­mission is its 1L Fellows Program, which provides a unique opportunity for diverse 1L students to obtain highly coveted ­summer associate ­positions in large, top-tier law firms as well as in the legal departments of major corporations. The Fellows Program was only a few years young at the time of our selection, and most of its alums were still junior associates at PDLG member firms. Fast forward to today, the PDLG recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary and is proud to count four of its alums as law firm partners.

In recently sitting down to discuss the common criteria and reasons why we think our respective firms promoted us to partner, we both agreed that the PDLG, through its members and volunteers, prepared us many years ago—even before the start of our respective firm summer programs—to have a “partner mentality.” Prior to and during the course of summer programs, all 1L Fellows are required to participate in intensive workshops led by partners at PDLG member firms designed to sharpen interviewing, writing, networking, communication, time ­management and interpersonal skills in a law firm setting.
