For the past six years, I have taught in the paralegal studies program at Community College of Philadelphia. Every year, I get to know over a hundred students who are taking their first steps into the legal field. We teach associate’s degree students, post-baccalaureate, graduate students and even midlevel career changers in our classrooms. In many ways, the faculty and I get to create the lens through which our students view the legal field. In faculty meetings and informal discussions, we struggle with questions as to the best way to introduce the profession and the role of a paralegal inside the broader legal landscape.

Two years ago, we partnered with the Fox Rothschild Center for Law & Society at Community College of Philadelphia and Community Legal Services to provide a one-day expungement clinic. We used Community College of Philadelphia’s Northwest Campus at Broad and Godfrey. Initially, we were concerned about interest and attendance and even hung fliers at libraries and recreation centers in the days leading up to the event and a photo of the flier was circulated on
Instagram.
