I find it ironic that, as a divorce attorney, I have spent more time talking about marriage in the last four months than ever before. I am often reminded of the actor Peter Cook from one of my favorite movies, “The Princess Bride,” as he presides over the wedding of Princess Buttercup and her dear Westley, stating, with a slur, “Marriage. Marriage is what brings us together today.”
Marriage is what brought many New Jersey same-sex couples together Oct. 21. Now, some of you might be scratching your heads, thinking, “What year is it? I thought that same-sex couples were already able to get married in New Jersey?” If you thought that, your facts are not completely accurate.
