John P. Lavelle and John Estey have grown up together professionally. They both started their careers clerking for U.S. District Judge Thomas O’Neill Jr. before moving on to Hangley Connolly Epstein Chicco Foxman & Ewing, and, after the firm split in 1994, both joined Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin.

Their career paths diverged when Estey accepted a position in the administration of Philadelphia Mayor Edward G. Rendell, but they remained close friends. So when Estey was part of the much-discussed defection from Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads to Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll in January, it presented an opportunity for the two to be reunited.
