About 60 percent of Philadelphia’s lawyers will experience a 40 percent increase in the cost of malpractice insurance in the coming year through the Philadelphia Bar Association’s legal malpractice carrier, Westport Insurance Co., Chancellor Allan H. Gordon said at the first Board of Governors meeting of 2002.

Despite the steep numbers, Gordon said this was “actually a competitive rate” and the best the bar association’s insurance broker, Colburn Insurance Service, was able to find for the group.
