Saying that the shared legal history between the United Kingdom and the United States will allow both nations to ensure legal fairness for all citizens in light of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Right Hon. Lord Peter Goldsmith, attorney general of Great Britain, addressed members of the Pennsylvania legal and professional community Wednesday.

“The common roots of the people of the United States and the United Kingdom can balance the rights of individuals with the needs of society,” Goldsmith said at the opening of a yearlong exhibition of the Magna Carta at the Independence Visitor Center, at Sixth and Market streets. He noted with humor that he found it ironic that he had been asked to speak in the United States on the eve of the Fourth of July.
