In addition to the Sept. 11 tragedy, 2001 will be remembered for the economic downturn that led to the second recession in the past 10 years. The events and aftermath of the terrorist attacks clearly heightened the economic uncertainty that already existed following the end of the decade’s prosperity. Like most businesses, the legal profession, along with the legal staffing industry, was affected.
Not all segments of the legal staffing business were affected similarly, however. While law firm associate hiring took the hardest hit, in-house hiring was somewhat less affected, and the partner market was not adversely affected at all. At the same time, demand for contract attorneys and paralegals, both permanent and temporary, rose.
